Growing a better future...
|

The Broomfield Garden is on one half acre owned by the Presbyterian Church of Broomfield.
Here is what it looked like before we started. As explained on the Welcome page, the idea is to lay out a number of key hole beds for easy access, ease of irrigation, and ease of maintenance. For the year 2009 we only have the far side of the road next to the picnic tables. We anticipate use of a full acre at the site starting in 2010 (after the Church completes a construction project).
Here is the conceptual layout for the one half acre:

The first work day we had ten participants. We spread wood chips on the walkways, laid out 14 beds making two complete leaves, and completed sheet mulching on four of the beds. So far, this crew is the champion garden builders in the system.
Margaret Emerson and Nice-World bought four plum trees and four apple trees to start our food forest and Margaret planted asparagus and radishes.
We eventually completed 21 beds and installed a drip irrigation system. Although maybe 20 people contributed some time to the garden, it has come down to six people who have taken 'ownership' and are harvesting the abundance that we produced. I would urge anyone who has had anything to do with the garden to drop by and see what we accomplished.
We are gearing up now for the 2010 growing season. The group has discussed the options and we are going to expand the options for participation in this coming year. ALL BEDS WILL BE GARDENED ONLY WITH ORGANIC FERTILIZERS AND NO PESTICIDES.

Beds are available on the following basis:
| Garden | Community Time |
Cost |
| Share of the community beds | 4 hours per month | $0 |
| Share of community beds + individual bed | 4 hours per month | $25 |
| Individual 10' x 10' bed | $50 | |
| All include water, manure, weed barrier, mulch and wood chips |
All of the plots at the Presbyterian Church have been assigned as of June 2010 and we have renewed the pathways and rebuilt the drip system in the Double Key Hole pattern.

If you are interested in hands on experience with the permaculture process, we are currently building new beds that will be available for the 2011 season.
